To pj whose wife was "attacked by a pit bull": I am sorry when any one is attacked by a dog of any breed. It is a fallacy to say that pit bulls are the most aggressive because you hear so many reports of their attacks. The majority of
"reports" are describing any short haired dogs that attack and they are often mixed breed or another breed altogether.
The media seems to largely back breed specific legislation efforts. But the majority of pet owners do not.
Not sure this was the case, but sounds like your wife was bitten because the wrong end of what should have been a leash on the dog, was a person that was not responsible. Your wife suffered, and if the dog was euthanized ,then it's penalty was death. The thanks for all that should go with the owner that let it roam if that was the case. What happened to that owner?

While it is true that a large and/or powerful dog can do more damage in biting, it is not true to say that any breed is a viscious breed. That is just not the case.

Any dog of any breed can be dangerous.
I do believe that nurture has a lot to do with how a dog will be in regards to aggression towards people. But, I also know that the bloodlines of a dog can show what traits that specific dog will possibly have. You breed a people aggressive dog there is a chance his pups will be people aggressive. That goes for any breed.
I tend to think a lot of the smaller dogs are more aggressive towards people. There are attacks and killings on file done by little dogs... most popular is a Pomeranian mauling a baby to death. I know none of my American Pit Bull Terriers would ever even show aggression towards a person.

I wanted to add... It is a proven fact that BSL has not been affective in any one of the places it has been put into effect. The number of dog bites or attacks have failed to decrease.

There is no dog that is more aggressive than any other. It is all in how they are raised and socialized. The ones most people think of when they think of mean dogs (i.e. rottweillers, pit bulls, dobermans, etc.) are seen as mean because they were trained a lot as guard dogs or fighting dogs. It is hard to believe thirty years ago the english bulldog was one of the most aggressive and sought after fighting dogs in the world and look at them now.

There is no such thing as a vicious breed of dog. Ever heard the term "Born Innocent"? There is only stupid owners, who cannot be bothered to take the time or energy to train/socialize their dogs. Then the dog becomes a nuisance and in worse case scenarios a threat.

Do not believe all the BS that the media spews. Sure Pit bulls make good news! Whether is actually a pit bull or a pit bull cross or a bull terrier or bull dog or akita or rotweiller.. who knows! You never hear of a standard poodle attack or a lab attack. It just doesn't make a good story.

Before you judge an entire breed because of the media, rumors or myths.. please do some research. Right now alot of places are trying to enforce BSL. First its pit bulls, next it could very well be your dog.

Absolutely NOT...there are many dogs that have been breed to "be/look mean...but it is more in how the dog is raised and socialized...the Rotties are by far NOT the most aggressive!

Any kind can be aggressive. It's all in how you treat and raise them. I have been around all types of breeds, and none of them have showen any form of aggression. Most people think of Pitbulls being mean, most of them can be babies. If you don't mistreat the dog, or make them mean, they could be the sweatest dog. Like I said, it's all in how you treat and raise them.

actually, Chihuahuas are more aggressive than pit bulls, but I personally don't like any kind of dog unless it's a herding breed. Call me crazy, but I like loyal, SMART, medium sized, beautiful and athletic dogs. And how many agressive australian shepperds do you know? They will only nip on the heels of unruly kids, who probably deserve it anyway!

It all depends on how they are raised. I have known of Rottweillers that are nothing but big teddie-bears. On the other hand, I have a Bishon that someone abused as a pup. He is as mean as the day is long.

Rotts are not an aggressive breed. No 'breed' is aggressive, individual dogs are. It is not right to categorize an entire breed as aggressive or not.
