That's what you get when you buy projection TV this day. I bet your old model is CRT projection TV, well that one don't use lamp. But this day projection TV like LCD, DLP, SXRD, they use bulb as their light source.
So be careful and reconsider before you buy this product, and this is not just Sony.

Nothing wrong with that, your floor model wont last as long.
Your floor model picture degrades over time, the Sony with bulbs DO NOT. Put a new bulb in when it goes out, and picture looks brand new when you bought it.
Excellent picture.

KINDA SUCKS! doesn't it......
But at least Sony LAMPS are inexpensive compared to Panasonics......
Now here's several things to EXTEND the life of that BULB....
On and OFF.....LAMPS HATE ON AND OFF....That quartz glass is strong but doesn't like expanding/contracting....so, don't turn off your TV if you're mowing the lawn, changing the oil , making dinner or mopping the floor.....Won't be watching it for 3 or more hours? Turn it off......
Hot and Cold.....Lamps HATE HOT AND COLD......the temperature variances that is......LIVE IN WINTERLAND? Don't place your TV near an outside door....
DUST.....Lamps and OPTICS HATE Dust....Vacuum your TV room weekly.....
And if Dusty Mc Dusterson comes over to watch "Dusty" on "The Dirtlanders" come up from Dustland Texas to see the good ol' boys from Dirtland before heading off to Dustbowl, KS......Tell HIM the damn TV is BROKE, or the satellite, or the service box....or.......

All projection TV's have to replace a lamp every 2000-4000 hours. If you didn't know that until after you bought your TV, then that's your fault for not doing your research.
You're lucky that it only costs $200. I know of other lamps that cost $600.

Look on the bright side, it's better than having to buy a new TV every 2 years.
You can make the TV last longer by watching less TV.

I am through with Sony. I hate their products. They break down constantly. I have moved on.
