When the pressure is on, we leak toxins from our stress fractures.
I don't know if _everyone_ can. Some people, theists and non-theists, have some pretty serious wounds. Remember that guy who used to post graphic questions about Catholic priests? I don't think he could help being horrid. Some people are screaming for help and they don't even know it.
I guess most belief systems are like life rafts. You grasp them in the storm of life, and then it becomes a process of really getting aboard and learning how to maneuver safely to shore. There can be some rather desperate moments in that process. Some people are thankful enough for the raft, but they are still paralyzed with fear, and they bolster themselves with false confidence - denial. Instead of learning how to be competent and seaworthy, they attack fellow travelers. Tell everyone else, "You're doing it wrong." The false confidence makes them feel less anxious, but it never calms the fear or desperation.
I've seen it in Christians, and I've seen it in people of other belief systems.
It's hard to think of people who are kicking and fighting - vengeful, hateful, and destructive - as people in great need, but I think if we _could_ see them that way, it would be so much easier not to take it personally, and to treat them in a way that actually either calms them or at least eases their fear enough that they don't need to attack so viciously.
Maybe I'm a complete Pollyanna, but I don't think anyone just wakes up one morning and decides to be bitter and hateful just because it looks like a fun way of going through life.
;o)

You do a good job of being respectful.
There are quite a few who are able to do so, question and respond without being horrid.
I think we just have to ignore those who want to be horrid.

I hope no one here actually takes anything that's said here personally. I certainly don't.
It's good to be nice to people, but sometimes it's more important to love them. Sometimes that requires a bit of harshness, disconcerting as that may be.
EDIT: That doesn't mean shoving your own ideas down their throats, mind you, but simply stating what you think is true without equivocation.

I always thought the followers of the Lamb were a peaceful bunch, I guess I was wrong. At least we can still <3 each other.

Sure would be nice wouldn't it? I have written a couple of times to the answers team asking them to perhaps monitor. Maybe you could do the same. This site could be a great place to come to if it weren't for the nastiness.
