Smart companies and supervisors hire mothers. Mothers in general are honest, dependable and hard working. Also, being a mother is better training for all different types of jobs than any schooling or education. Let's not forget that a woman who also happens to be a mother is working to better the lives of her children. No one really works because they just love to be away from the kids!
Anyways, in response to your question:
It's unfortunate that some bosses are not more understanding. However, your vacation and sick time are yours. Yours to use as you see fit. And I can think of no better reason to use a sick or vacation day than an ill child. I think the best thing for you to do is to try to not over-think it. It may just be that your boss was having a bad day and decided to take it out (unjustly) on you. Continue to be a good employee and mom and the rest will work it's self out! Good luck to ya-

Welcome to the world of working women.
If your boss is going to be unreasonable, get mad and/or make the work situation uncomfortable, you need to find a new job. You'll be raising your kids for many many more years and you need someone who understands and lets you take your vacation time when it's needed.
If you have a computer and internet access at home, it may help diffuse the situation greatly if you offer to work from home when you have a sick child. This will prove that you're concerned about your job and not just playing hooky.
If there are lots of parents, you may suggest the company invest in a laptop which can be used in such cases.

Hi, Is your boss mad at you? has he/she indicated so? or was there a little tension when you initially discussed taking time to be with your child? Sometimes things aren't always as they appear. Perhaps when you requested to take time your boss was stressing about other things and exhibited some hostility/anger toward you that might not of had anything to do with you.. Also another thought is - have you taken a lot of time off of work recently or on particular days ? for example: every other Monday or always on Fridays? Having a family indeed is very demanding and working mothers and fathers sometimes have back up sitters that are willing to stay home with their little ones when they are ill. Sometimes couples split the time between them such as your husband/significant other took two days off of work to stay home with your child so you will take the next couple of days off and this type of team work is always good when you have children while juggling a career. Another possiblity would be to schedule a short meeting with your boss to discuss your concerns.

Unfortunately, some bosses just don't care about their employees families. They just look at the bottom line. Does your company have a set of rules and regs regarding employment? If so, you should read over all of it and see what that says. If you get in trouble for missing work because of a sick child, perhaps you should try to find another job, if that is possible. Either way, your child is your top priority.
Good luck.

No he shouldn't. He is just worried cause you are using up your sick or holiday leave!!
I would not worry. Family come first. Just take the time you need. It always helps if you get a doc certificate for your child or a certificate of attendance for you.
Show your boss the certificate so he knows you are for real.
It could be that people in the workplace have done the dirty on him and he is thinking you are just taking time off for the sake of it.
Good luck

No and inform them that they don't have policies pertaining to this. Depending on each state there are laws that says immediate family as sick time. Most employers understand the sick children thing.

This is why companies do not like to hire mothers. They take so many sick days. Maybe it is wrong for them to try to avoid hiring mothers, but from a business standpoint it's a good idea.

no but some companies have policies where you have to schedule these days in advance. I would definitely take a doctors note when you return so they have proof and they can't penalize you for missing

He could be mad if it's a busy time or something. He may not be mad, just under pressure if it's really busy.
