Parents that insist on using terms such as "Use you inside voice", "Timeout" and "Outside play". What ever happened to "Quiet down", "Go to your room" and "Playing outside"? It sounds so rediculous to me. Are they trying to get the parent of the year vote? Well, from me they won't. My brother-in-law and his wife use these and similar terms all the time and they sound like such idiots. In my opinion, using terms like that instead of NORMAL terms is a great way to mess your kid up. Don't get me wrong, I wholeheartedly believe in discipline. I am quite strict myself but I don't sound like a text book when I talk to my daughter. Does this annoy you too or are my wife and I the only ones?

I can see I have hit a few nerves with this question. Glad to see that there are people who share my view as well and love the answer that say it is "RICH" talk.

omg yes i`m like huhh ? what happend to being able to call the child by the whole name and *snap* the know what your talking about and straghtin up.. thats how i was raised and i want to instill that in my son not " young man you are acting inapropriatly. you need to reflect on your performance." i hate that... its not that were not educated to use such words its more like we don`t want our kids to be snobby brats that decide to extremely rebel and were not fake or afaid of our kids hating us cuz we know whats best.. not raising kids with our nose suck so far in a book that were oblivious to what our instinct is telling us.. good luck

well whats wrong with the words someone uses really???i think its the same thing as tomaaaatoe or tomahhhhtoe who cares!!! as long as they get the job done...It may annoy me that some one burps!!! and drinks a beer and watches nascar i mean people get mad about stuff and point fingers and to me its just as annoying. live and let live !! people using the inside voices thing comes from teachers who think its best to let kids know that when inside they should use a voice that's appropriate to the interior so what!!!would you want to be called stupid for something you say or is it OK if people think that your an idiot personally i don't care to be viewed as an idiot ,there is a difference because telling a kid to quiet down isn't wrong in the right moment ,but when its a class full of kids that you are trying to teach by example would you want them to tell you quiet down or shut up?????or do we teach our kids to have some respect ,save yourself the heartattack and just let it go its ok !!

Disclaimer-- I'm not a parent, yet, but I do deal with little children on occasion. I love them dearly, they're just not mine.

I agree with the term, "outside play"... I've never heard it.

I do use, "Use your inside voice," but mostly because I'm dealing with other people's kids. I had one child who decided that the term, "shut up" was a swear word. When she told her parents I'd sworn at her, all kinds of people were pretty up tight about it.

I know that time out is one of the non-violent techniques parents can use to teach their children. Whether that time out is in a corner, in the child's room, whatever, it can be pretty effective when used correctly... The problem is that I'm not really sure what that is, so....

I've even put myself in "timeout" on occasion. "I'm really angry right now, so I'm going to go to my room till I'm calm."....

what happened to "shut up already" haha Joking. My mom said that to me a couple times tho...but I wasn't a child....

timeouts dont always work but go to your room doesn't work either. rooms are FULL of toys!! timeouts suck but work sometimes .....

I've heard go play outside enough as a child!

inside voice-the day care I worked at used that I always said "quiet down" or "why are we being so loud today?" I'd get cute answers! lol

It doesn't really annoy me, but my children are fairly young, 2 and 4 and need fairly specific detail, so telling them to go to time out wouldn't really be that useful.

I usually say things such as go and sit on your bed until mummy says you can come out.

I often ask them to whisper, when they are yelling in the car as they understand what this means.

I don't think it really matters what language you use as long as your children can understand it.

how is it going to mess up your kids. If that is the term parents use then that is what they know. Time out is a discipline action that is very different to go to your room. Time out should not even be done in a bedroom. You must not have much going on in your life if these are the biggest concerns in your life.

It doean't so much annoy me but I think it is hillarious I tell my kids to hush, sit down and get in your room If I told them to use your inside voice they would look at me like I was nuts. My kids even give strange looks when they hear other people asking their kids to please do something in their quietest voice for the 3rd time.

I am all about the way you talk :) You won't find me telling them to use their inside voices, I just tell them to quiet down. Go to your room, they here that a lot when they are in trouble :)

How in the world can someone actually being a parent annoy you?!? What annoys me is when parents yell and curse at their kids and tell them to shut-up.
I tell my daughter time-out. She goes and sits down until I come to get her. No drama. The way someone else parents shouldn't annoy you. You should applaud them for actually giving a damn about their child and attempting to raise someone who will be a productive adult.
