There is a long bronze or copper-plated steel rod, usually with a circular or hexagonal cross section. They are usually about 10-15 feet long and hammered down into ground. There may be a cluster of them connected together.

There is a heavy bare wire going from the ground rod to the item or electrical system needing to be connected to ground.

There is a large copper clamp that connects to the rod and holds the connecting wire.

There is usually a solution of conductive salts (like copper sulfate) that is used to soak the ground around the rod where it is driven into the ground.
