When I lived in San Antonio, I had a T-shirt of Speedy Gonzales that featured his friendly image. A couple of Chicanos told me at an art opening one night, “That shirt is racist.” I replied, “Speedy is kind, helpful, smart, energetic and he always wins. You guys are right. He ain’t a Mexican at all.” Fortunately, their switchblades jammed as I did an impersonation of Speedy..

I believe their switchblades jammed, those cheap ones they sell in Mexico always malfunction. But I would have loved to have seen your Speedy impersonation, hindsight that had to be a funny experience for you.

Oh geez. My parents are Mexican, and I don't think Speedy Gonzales is racist at all. I think he's really cute and funny. Those Chicanos are really stupid and should be doing other things to help out their fellow Mexican brothers and sisters than picking on a defenseless cartoon mouse.

Your last sentence is funny, but a bit racist. As for Speedy, I totally agree that he is not racist. I suppose some La Raza hombres will take a dislike to anything Gringo, but they don't appreciate Speedy like you and I do.

I don't think Speedy Gonzales is racist, but with that cartoon people just see the stereotype of a Mexican....and I'm glad about the switchblades..

And to Bombastic-
Do you even know the reason why they are boycotting Disney? Find the story and THEN talk. You can't talk if you don't know the whole story. Oh and they don't mean Disney as in the man.

They don't think it is a racist depiction. "Mexican" is not a race, it is a nationality. However, there are some who think Speedy Gonzales demeans Mexicans. Its humor relies on stereotypes, and stereotypes generally cut a bit close to the bone for the likes of most people who are on the receiving end of such generalities.
