It could be the carbonation that makes you feel bloated. As far as the weight gain, some people's bodies can't process the aspartame since it's not a natural form of sugar and it just stores it away.

The sodium in the diet coke also makes you retain water so the weight gain could be from water weight. Drinking more water will actually help your body flush out the excess.

I also gave up soda as my new year's resolution a couple of years ago and I lost almost 20lbs in that one year!!! Every once in a while I indulge, but I don't drink it regularly anymore.

Perhaps the diet has more carbonation than the regular, which is making you feel more bloated. Other than that, it may just be psychological because you feel guilty about drinking something so delicious that's supposedly "guilt-free." Another thing could be that because it's diet, you're drinking MORE of it than you did with regular coke, and thus you're more bloated and filled with gassy air. In any case, a few hours after you drink it (i.e. later that night or the next morning), is the bloated feeling gone? Have you actually gained more in POUNDS and/or inches? If the feeling goes away and you haven't quantitatively gained weight, either just ignore the feeling (knowing that it'll pass), or stop drinking the soda if it makes you feel so bad. Either way, definitely don't go back to drinking the regular -- if anything just stop all together! Good luck! Hang in there; I know how tough it can be to diet!

soda gives you an unhealthy feeling. i dont drink it. i gave it up for new year's resolutions. diet coke can cause cancer- i have heard. if you don't like the feeling you get (which I also used to get) stop drinking it and drink water, milk or juice. =)

it is real and not weird=when you swallow the pop you swallow air as well=the pop is fizzy =between the both you end up feeling bloated=usually burping helps to relieve it
