Sushi can be fattening or not, depending on the choices you make, but it certainly does not have to be. Making sensible decisions is what it is all about. http://www.sushifaq.com has a large section with the nutritional value of many sushi items and I suggest checking it out if you are interested. With two to three of the salmon & avocado rolls, for example, are pushing 600-900 calories (see below) because the avocado can be fattening, and salmon is also a particularly fatty fish (although at least it is heart friendly fat). Also, rolls can vary greatly depending on fillings and the methodology of the itamae (sushi chef). Some rolls are naturally low in calories, however, It's all about the choice you make.
Here are a couple of common rolls.
Baseline calories in an entire roll:
Salmon & Avocado Roll 304 Calories
California Roll 255 Calories
Kappa Maki (cucumber roll) 136 Calories
Spicy Tuna Roll 290 Calories
If you want a greatly expanded list of information on more rolls and sushi items, as well as carbs, grams of fat, protein, etc, you should check out:

Here is a chart for the calories in sushi~
http://www.healthyweightforum.org/eng/calorie-counter/calories_in_sushi/
The California Rolls (Sushi) would add about 33 calories to your total intake for the day.
Remember sushi is a healthy choice, low in fat, cholesterol, sodium and calories. A typical serving of sushi contains about 2-3 grams of fat, 3-4 mg.
A traditional sushi meal consists of 7 types of fish/seafood sushi, one egg sushi and a roll; totaling 350-400 calories, depending slightly on the size and type of fish.

RE:
Is sushi low in calories?
I heard sushi is low in calories, therefore you'll gain very little weight. Is this true?

most sushi is low in in calories. it starts getting high in calories when you start adding a lot of stuff to it. toppings and stuff that they may put on it will make the calorie count increase.

I'm Anthony. I lost 75 pounds and shed my high school nickname Pudgy. Our family has a tragic history of cardiac disease and rheumatoid arthritis. I am proud to say that family tradition ends with me. I know I have broken the cycle and will never have to be faced with those illnesses. Thank, you have changed my life.

The fish itself is very low calorie. However, as soon as you add any rice to it (or any other starch), the calories go up.

it depends... the rice is carbos, so too many pieces will give you lots of calories... no fried toppings or heavily seasoned toppings too...
but it's relatively lower in calories compared with a lot of other foods :D
