what are those big machines that are like chain reaction for example ball rolls down hits a car car goes forward pulls a string another ball drops rolls around hits a panel that turns on a fan. something like that what are they called i cant remember

Those are nick named after the famous cartonist RubeGoldberg. Goldberg ran a syndicated carton in the newspapers which depicted these "do nothing" machines in which cranks, bells , and whistles, basically cranked out noting useful. He was notorious in pursuing a more challenging "useless" machine as each weekly syndication went on and on for years. So one can study his early cartons and see they were quite simple and progressed as time passed to more larger and more complex do noting machines.

The machines you see in for example. " Childerens Hospital" in Boston are working machines, they actually load a ball and it passes thru a large number of interesting events as it falls downward. The Rube Goldeberg cartons appeared as working , but in actuality, they were never workable sketches when studied carefully.
