I've tried over 100 tequilas, and while my favorites are $40+/btl, the best bang for the buck I've found is 'Cinco de Mayo.' I can't find it in Michigan anymore, but it's a 100% blue agave reposado (aged between 3 and 12 months) and it was really decent for the $15 price tag (same as *gag* Cuervo gold). It's not quite a sipper, but a great shooter or margarita choice and EXCEPTIONAL for the price range.
If you can't find that, my faves under $30 are 1800 blanco, Sauza Hornitos reposado (100% pure reposado, slightly harsh), Sauza Conmemorativo (not 100% pure, but is aged over a year which makes it very smooth for 'ritas).
Sauza Hacienda is excellent, but you have to buy it in Mexico. The American version is not 100% pure (and has a different colored label).
Hope this helps!

Casa Noble Crystal
"Many purists believe that tequila is best when it is NOT aged. We feel it is just a matter of taste. But for those who want the best "silver" we created Casa Noble Crystal. We call it Crystal because we believe it is superior to all silver tequilas. It's in a class by itself. Contained in a beautiful hand blown glass decanter, adorned with an exquisite metal engraved label, Casa Noble Crystal has absolutely no rival in this category, and it lets you appreciate the exceptional pureness and glow of this unique tequila."

El Toro; at $14 for 1L bottle, 100% Agave and a true tequila, it is the best tequila to purchase for value.

Cuervo is for Tequila novices. That is toilet swill compared to many other tequilas. (my opinion + several customer opinions)
For the price, Sauza in the green bottle ($30.00 for a .750 ml) is a good drink for a fair price.

great question. In my research, I got angry, b/c all of the high scoring tequilas that are resonably priced, are not available in Ohio. : (
Hopefully where you live has a better selection of Tequila.
I can't remember the name of the one that I reallly wanted to try, I believe it was casa vieja.
Good luck,
J
