That's a great idea. It's so much better than feeding crappy food from a can. Be sure to put in lots of veggies, meat and talk to your vet about what supplements your dog might need. Make sure that you still allow him dry food (Innova is the best), water at all times and give him bones throughout the day. Get the bones from the butcher as most butchers will give the bones away for free. Never feed the dog fish or chicken bones as they may splinter. Same rule goes for cooked bones.

You could. I still feed my dogs canned and dry food from a brand that wasn't recalled. There are lots of good brands out there and not much media on the processing plants until something happens. I saw a processing plant for chickens from the inside, and what I saw there made me think long and hard about eating chickens for human consumption.
I still eat commercial chicken but look for brands that say they are better than the ones from that factory. There's no way for me to know if they are better but it's easier to eat something if you haven't seen the processing plant. If you want to make your own food, you would be guaranteed of the process and content and wouldn't have to use preservatives, but you would need to give your dogs a balanced diet. So here's a link to a raw feeding site. Whether you choose to go raw or cook meat and discard cooked bones and give alternatives for chewing and find some bone meal to add, this site has other things dogs need in their diet and ratios for food that are informative:

Dry dog food and loaf style can is safe to feed to your dog. Only the cuts and gravy type food had been recalled. Wheat gluten is thought to be the culprit. If you choose to make your own food, go online and look for what is good and wholesome for you pets. Trust me, I'm looking into doing this also. I have 10 dogs and don't want to lose any of them to illness. Not all human chemicals are good for your animals. Did you know that alot of chemicals have been removed from dog and cat foods and added to what human's eat? This is something to really think about.
