Relax your leg and massage the muscle lengthwise......you're trying to stimulate blood flow and get rid of lactic acid, drink water to stay hydrated.

Aren't those awful? The only thing that you can do is stretch the muscle as much as you can stand. Try and stretch the muscle in the opposite direction in which it is cramping. Also, if you have a cold or cool tile floor in your house or apartment, go stand on that floor for a few minutes in your bare feet. I don't know what the cold has to do with it, but it does seem to help loosen the muscle. I do this when I get them in the middle of the night. I go stand on my tiled bathroom floor and it takes care of the problem fairly quick.

As a past sufferer of charlie horses, I know your pain all too well. In the midst of one you have to stnd up and put pressure on your foot. Lean forward to stretch the calf. To make them go away permanently, start taking calcium supplements before bedtime with a glass of milk or other dairy, or natural fat. Calcium absorbs better with a little fat.
