Yesterday my husband and I scrubbed the carpets in our house, and while it has NEVER smelled like animal pee before, it reeks now. This isn't the first time we have scrubbed our carpets using a similar machine, however this IS the first time I have used my mother's scrubber. My mom has had a rough time with pet stains in her basement, which have left a definite lingering smell, although she is dilligent to clean. Could it have been the scrubber that caused this? We DO have pets, but this has never happened before. We used a pet type of cleaner in the scrubber, but instead of clean carpet,, now we have a stinky house. HOW DO WE GET RID OF IT??

It’s very possible.

Our carpet cleaner would spread and unbelievable odor if we didn’t clean it properly after using it for accidents (my dog was very elderly and had trouble “holding it,” so there was a lot of cleaning to be done).

Clean every part of it you can in bleach and hot water. Re-clean your carpet with it. In the meantime, light some good scented candles, they do wonders.

There is also a white powder you can buy, sprinkle on the carpet, leave for a while, and then simply vacuum up that is very good for pet odor. We used Carpet Fresh, but there are many types.

Good luck.

Well, I have had really good luck getting rid of odors using that powder carpet deodorizer they sell in the grocery store. A few companies make it such as arm and hammer. There are ones developed especially for pet odors but I would go for one of the regular scents that you find pleasing first. You just sprinkle it on and then vacuum it up. You have to wait until the carpet is completely dry first! The longer you leave it on the better it works. So you may want to try leaving it on for 30 minutes or so.

Good luck!

You can try a couple of things. First spray the rug with a vinegar and water solution that will get some of the odor out.

I also found that you can get this multi purpose cleaner from Sams Club called Odo Ban. It kills germs, eliminates odors and you can use it as a air freshener right on your fabrics. We have even put the stuff into the rug shampooers to help freshen rugs.

Gee, I sound like a commercial.

Really this stuff works.

Sounds like the machine doesn't have great suction, sort of pulled the smells up, but not out.. I would redo them and get the Bissell soap for Pet odours and mix a wee bit of Oxy Clean in there... That's going to get the smell out! Let it dry entirely, then vacuum.

Whenever my cats have an accident and forgot to go to the litter box, I spray it with a cleaning product called Simple Green. I knocks the odor right out and is nontoxic. It can be used for most household cleaning.
