There is no overall "ASVAB Score." When someone says "I got an 80 on my ASVAB," they are talking about their AFQT (Armed Forces Qualifying Test) score, not an "overall" ASVAB Score. The ASVAB test gives several different "scores." The key for enlistment in the military is the AFQT. The other scores determine qualifications for different occupational fields. The four areas of the ASVAB (out of nine total) used to compute the AFQT score are: Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmatic Reasoning, and Mathmatics Knowledge. There is a rather complicated formula to convert the "raw score" in each section to a percentile, ranging from 1 to 99. So, an AFQT of 50 does not compare to getting 1/2 "right" answers. Some of the questions are weighted, with the more difficult giving greater weight.
The person's AFQT score is a percentile score, based on the population of test-takers. The percentiles are based upon a 99 point scale with 99 being the highest. So, if an individual has an AFQT score of 50, then his/her AFQT "raw score" is better than 50 percent of the individuals who took the test. The AFQT gives recruiters a "Category" of 1A to V. 1 is 93 or above, V is between 9 and below.

When I took the ASVAB 3 years ago, I made a 72 and thought i did horrible. To my surprise they told me that the average score for a 17 -19 yr old was 35.

I am 16, and I got a 97. Also, I see on a lot of websites that say that since it is a percentile system, 50 should be the average (because of 50% and all). However, I think they calibrate the system by taking a group of 100 every few years and test them and use them as the control group. However, 100 people doesn't necessarily represent the entire nation accurately. I think that the average can fluctuate.

50 b/c that means that you scored better than 50% of the people that took the "base test". Base test means the people that took the test 20 odd years ago and they base everyone tests today on percentiles compared to that test.
So take the minimum score of 31 or 32 (I think they just lowered it) to get into the Army; this means you scored 32% better than those people who took the test way back.
Don't know if it was my recruiter feeding me bullsh*t but he said he gets a lot of people that score below the minimum and that the average was around mid 30's to low 40's.

I can't believe, literally, how dumb some kids are these days. If you can't get over a 20, then you don't belong in the military, period. I never studied for it, I got a 92. Average, I heard was around 40, but it makes sense that it would be fifty, as the average of a 99% would be 50.

I talked to my recruiter and a lot of kids he recruited were scoring between 40 and 60. However he wasn't necessarily pulling candidates from mensa. But still most of the guys I'm friends with in my unit all scored above 85.
