I found it odd that this person not only eats the entire entree before eating each side dish, but the different foods on the plate also cannot touch each other. Is there any ettiquette to suggest if this is rude, or simply just an odd way to eat?

The food cannot touch each other on the plate and he eats the entire entree (or side dish if that is the food starting at 12:00 as if the plate is a clock) before going on to the side dishes and then the beverage. The reason I thought it was somewhat abnormal and in a sense rude is because the pattern of eating was independent of the food presented. A dish served hot would not be eaten hot if it were not on the 'starting' side of the plate. I was taught this is socially juvenile and rude to the cook.

Your friend may be a bit regimented and ritualized, but I wouldn't really worry unless it starts to really affect his daily life(for instance, wrapping his utensils in napkins a la Howard Hughes, or throwing tantrums). I myself like to eat one thing at a time to really savor it, and I don't really care for food touching other food either as they will affect each other flavorwise. As for the hot entree, perhaps the food in question was simply too hot for him to eat at the time- I frequently had to wait for my food to cool down any time I ate at my grandmother's house(she had lost her sense of heat/ temperature). And who knows- perhaps he has actually been taught to eat things in a particular order by someone else(not that it was necessarily the right thing to do, though). Just relax about it, and I am sure he will too at some point.

Maybe obsessive compulsive disorder. If it is you will notice other ritualistic habits. I don't think I have OCD but I can be very particular, like food not touching each other. I do not eat each one separately though. As for being rude I don't think so. Maybe they just chose to savor one taste at a time. Who knows, if your that good of friends ask. There is nothing wrong with being curious or concerned.

The only "rude" thing about this is if you were to ask your friend why he eats that way.
It just goes to show you how different each one of us is from the other...how we dress, how we bathe, even how we like to enjoy our meals.
How about this...as a kid one of my favorite breakfasts that mom would make would be fried eggs, home fries, and scrapple (yeah, I'm from Philly).
I just loved to pour on some ketchup, and procede to cut everything up and mix into one pile.
Now, how abnormal or weird is that?
(of course, the caveat is this was at home and not in a restaurant)
Hey...each to his own.

Sounds like your friend has OCD. Nothing wrong with that. Is he capable of good conversation? That's what matters. This isn't rude at all. Maybe he gets to savor each individual flavor on his palate before moving on to the next taste.

No, for some reason some people prefer to eat that way and eat one thing on their plate at a time. which really isn't a bad idea b/c sometimes you get full quicker and won't eat as much.

You wouldn't believe how many food fetishes there are, and how many cases of 'unusual' behavior are associated with food. What your friend does isn't what most people do, but there is nothing in the etiquette books that says you have to eat your food in any particular order - or disorder.
But it sounds as though his problems go far beyond etiquette or rudeness and edge into outright psychotic behavior.

Define "normal". To each his own. Not everyone is going to eat the same way as the next, therefore, I think its just an odd way to eat. To suggest to this person that you think it is rude, is in fact rude itself.

This is hardly rude and you should be more considerate. Your 'friend' has a type of obsessive compulsive disorder. He is not harming anyone by doing this. Do not ridicule him or call him rude. It will only make it worse. he needs understanding and consideration.

I actually know quite a few people who eat that way...I don't think it's uncommon. And I don't think it's obsessive-compulsive disorder either, in spite of what other folks are saying. It's a little strange, but everyone has their quirks.
