Definitely take her shopping to look at rings so you can get an idea of what she likes. Her job may not be as big of an issue as you think.. she may prefer to remove her rings at work. I know my husband who is a mechanic can't wear his because of safety rules.. he's lost 3 already.. I give up! Don't be bullied by the diamond sellers.. they have a vested interest in getting you to cough up more than you can afford for a diamond! It might not be the first place you'd look, but Costco has an excellent selection of high quality jewellery at minimal markup! And if you find a setting you like, you may be able to get a good deal on a stone on eBay! That's what I did when my daughter lost the center stone out of my original engagement ring... I developed an allergy to white gold and could no longer wear it, but she LOVED it. I got a beautiful stone and had it reset into the ring for a fraction of the cost local jewellers quoted. Just watch the listings and check the feedback scores carefully.. and remember that digital photography can make even a chip look like the hope diamond! Watch the 'points' in the description.. .20 is a substantial stone, a 5th of a carat. .020 is a chip used as accents, and .002 is pretty close to dust!

It is not the size that matters. I would try to concentrate more on the style. I recommend since she packs and unpacks boxes to get a ring w/ an embedded diamond, instend of one that sticks up. The ones the stick up look bigger, but you said she likes smalled. If you are thinking size wise 1/2 carat will prob. be sufficent. My husband and I started ring shopping together a year before we got engaged to give him ideas on what I like. (If you are looking for something w/ more total wieght, you can also consider putting diamonds in the wedding band. A friiend of mine's engament ring was simple but elegant (and very inexpensive)- instead of the traditional hunk of diamond she had a band w/ little chips all the way around.

Very good and practical thinking there. Try for one that fits flatter across the hand. perhaps one with several small diamonds and one without a claw clasp.
I'd take her along (after you have proposed with a ring) and get her to try a couple on to choose.
If you want to do preliminary work - just go into a jeweler and ask they are sure to be very helpful.
Remember that the clarity of a diamond i.e how clear it is - not a yellowish or brown tinge is more important than size if you are looking for a quality diamond.
Good luck and congrats!

Small but tasteful, in a shape that isn't flashy. A classic round, emerald, or princess (square) cut is best. Platinum is a strong material for the ring, but is pricey. White gold is less expensive but not as strong. Avoid yellow gold (flashy).
Amazon has a great service that lets you design a ring based on the size of diamond, budget, shape, and quality of diamond (also very important.) Give it a shot--you'll probably find what you're looking for.
Good luck on your engagement!
Stick to diamonds, too. Don't add other stuff, like pearls or rubies, into the mix.

If you love her, you won't buy her any diamonds. Go see the movie Blood Diamond and read the transcript found at the link below to learn more about the hidden truth about diamonds.

Don't believe people that say size doesn't matter. The bigger the better! Just make sure you can afford it. Try pawn shops or antique stores. You may even see some advertised in the classifieds. Just don't settle for a BIG, HUGE & EXPENSIVE ring in a jewelry store when you have other options. Hey! Who says it has to be a diamond? Why not her birth stone?

why don't you find out if she even likes diamonds? no need to waste money when you can buy her something just as expensive or meaningful and have it be something she'll really love
