I work in Fashion and the biggest rule is there are no rules. Not wearing white after labor day is something that comes from the generation of our grandmother's. However, if you don't feel comfortable being free to wear what you like, as long as it's age appropriate and compliments your figure, then you shouldn't do it. Only a truly comfortable man or woman can pull off this fashion statement. Another option is winter white. Good Luck!

I think that these types of rules are no longer set in stone, as they were in the 50's and before. However, most of the time white cocktail dresses and formal wear are only appropriate between Easter and Labor Day unless A) you are a bride, B) it is winter white (off-white), or B) it is a print or pattern in which the white does not predominate.
Generally speaking, summer clothes are sold at different times and are in different styles from cool-weather clothes anyway, so you can let what's out in the stores guide you. If you live in a place where the climate stays warm most of the year ( South FL, Hawaii, etc), the rule is usually relaxed and people wear anything all year round (NOT in the Deep South though, where "ladies that lunch" will look down their bespectacled noses at anyone in white shoes in March, no matter how friggin' hot it is outside!).

It's supposed to be no summer white before Easter and after Labor Day. You can wear winter white between Labor Day and Easter... but the old 'rules' don't really apply any longer. You can wear summer white in the fall paired with orange or brown, and in the winter with red or black.

Used to be you started to wear white on Memorial Day and stopped on Labor Day. Most people today don't pay ay attention to the old fashion rule.

Many of those old fashion/style rules have lightened up considerably in recent decades. So, I really wouldn't worry about it too much. Just go with the flow and/or your instincts to determine if white is appropriate to wear at a given event at a certain time of year. If all else fails, ask a fashion expert.

There was a time when that was a serious thing. Never white before that date, it was practically a sin. Not any more you can wear white any time now. I am sure you have heard of winter white.

In this century, I doubt it matters anymore. Maybe in the 1920's people cared about stuff like that, but not in 2007 lol.

White is typically begun to be worn on Easter and ends on Labor Day.
