It's an example of anthropomorphism - Assigning human attributes to things by default. Hence the idea that the universe had an intelligent cause, rather than a natural one.

Astronomers and physicists have determined that their is not enough physical matter to account for the mass of the galaxies and the universe. They have theorized something called 'dark matter', but it only helps satisfy their theories and they don't really have any examples of what might be considered 'dark matter'. Other dimensions exist beneath our own, or our own is 'deeper' than is casually apparent in terms of physical detection. If all physical matter has an ectoplasmic 'under body', that could satisfy many people in different fields of natural study. Ya know?
