The persistance of vision of the eye lead to many toys which showed people moving when viewed through a slot. Edison mearly took that idea and added Kodak's continuous celluloid film to the mechanical system that duplicated it. I shouldn't say mearly because the mechanics of it were difficult. There were several others at the time in various countries who did essentially the same thing.
