Depends on what sort of tai chi instructor. There are a few tai chi people that teach real self-defense or combat.

The chess master could probably outsmart his opponent, though. He/she'd always think 20 moves ahead and know every move the tai chi master could possibly make.

Tai Chi instructor would win in a street fight, chess is a more strategic combative art! LOL

Tai Chi is a beautiful but deadly dance. They work out everyday. A chess player has brains but not really an power. if they are a chess master they probably don't work out that much. you have to know your body.
