The beauty of a hook is it doesn't have to have a lot of power behind it to be effective. Sure, if you can put a left hook through a wall it helps, but the secret is accuracy and speed, not so much as power. The perfect hook is a surprise to your opponent that they don't see coming that lands right on the point of their chin. Even if it's just a tap on the point of the chin, the speed and accuracy is what counts, not the power behind the punch.
Some of the most effective hooks are simple quick snaps to the chin, it is amazing how delicate a jaw is when tapped on the point of the chin. Improve your speed and accuracy, the power comes from that snap at the end of the punch not the muscle you possess.
Hooks to the body are different, and those you can work on with a heavy bag or in the weight room. Still the aspects of anatomy and accuracy are the most important points, but blunt power matters more in a body shot. The object is to drive that lowest rib into the liver, it also will drop the toughest most conditioned of athletes like a rag doll, and no matter who you are or what you pain threshold, an accurate hook to the liver in worse that a low blow.

When throwing the hook the primary muscle group involved is the shoulder. It acts as a hinge, much like in a door, as you swing your arm in arching motion. Therefore, shoulder workouts, i.e. military presses and lateral dumbell raises, are a must. Remember, however, that the power of a hook comes all the way from the pivoting of the legs and the hips so don't forget the squat (full squats) for that extra power.

the best way to learn any punch is to put yourself in the mirror and watch your form, for the hook when you've threw the punch just stop and look in the mirror your elbow should be a lil higher than your fist, your front foot should still be in front of your target and you hand should not be thrown past the half way point, if you go pass the half way point you may throw yourself off balance. just do this for a couple of days and then try it on a heavy bag for 3-4 rounds nothing but hooks for 2-3 days and once you get the form down just start putting your hip into it.

when you do a hook, every part of your body rotates. the power of the rotation comes from the legs. this will increase your power. if ur body doesn't rotate, then there wont be much power. the wider the rotation the more powerful it is but harder to land.
