I live about an hour away from Amish Acres and usually go there in the fall for the annual Apple Festival. When I go I stay at the Inn at Amish Acres. It is a very nice and hospitable hotel. They offer packages that are well worth the money that you spend because they usually include your lodging, meals and participation in a variety of events and tours around the property. Good luck and have a great time!

Interesting stuff already. I'm from Northern IN and the last time I looked around, The Essenhaus people had a much better set up than the Amish Acres folks. Also, if you go into Shipshewana (at the junction of State Road 5 and US 20), you'll find smaller places plus you'll be right in the middle of a heap of shops that cater to 'Amish Country' tourists AND you'll be walking the streets with them! I know the proprietors of the Davis Mercantile- nice folks; there's a map link for it on the first link below. They have lodging and shopping under 1 roof. Driving along highway 20 you will also see some Bed and Breakfasts (third link is for a list of B & B's- but I'm not familiar with them all... my cousins own some of them but not sure which ones! lol). Last link is just some other stuff to do while you're there. I love the Shipshewana area although I no longer live there. Enjoy!

Hello, I am glad that you are going to visit the Amish area. When you do get a place to stay, fine, then take a bike ride thru the country, and even stop at one or two of their country stores. Of course they make cabinets, but try to find someone who makes the buggy, and the wheels, and stop buy, and with your open interest you may be invited into their home and get full conversation of their life style. Even look up an Amishman that sells the laundry washers, or raises the plow horses.
One time I was at an Amish farm outside looking at the yardsale items and the lady started singing to herself, and I thought 'oh, oh, no radio' which I knew, but I hadn't thought of singing to my self yet.
If you do inquire and can contrubute, your interest of the Amish may be changed to 'Why not?' I do remember going to a Menonite church and sitting on the mens side, and the women sat on the womens side. The Menonite church is in English, the Amish church is in Amish. The Menonite's are considered 'yanked-over-Amish'. At the last Amish auction I was at I was told about the fiberglass buggy wheels. I guess I'm a little behind. Of the Amish men, you can tell who are married, but the women you cant. You may get invited the a Saturday-nite-out at the local ice cream pad, where all the buggies go on a date. Oh the buggy, oh it's beautiful natural wood, until it's painted black. I do say, open up, learn, and enjoy your vacation. Shipshewana is an Amish aucton place, Wednesdays. The town does have some stop signs. The outside sales are Tues & Wed, I think, and I feel they are more commerical now. I enjoyed bicycling there, walking around the outside sales (there's a lot of them) eating lunch down town, and talking around some more, then bicycling back home in MI. Something you could do.
