It is used in any situation where you would use "to" or "for" a person or thing in English. I give something to you (you being dative). It is in fact a present for you (you again being dative). Think of it as the generous case.

The same as the dative in any other 'case' languages.... marks the indirect object.

It's the indirect object. In english the words 'with' or 'for' would be in front of it.
