but when people use quotes like: GOD IS AWESOME GOD IS GREAT I WILL FOREVER WALK WITH HIM, HE IS MY LIGHT HE IS THE AIR THAT I BREATHE.
and talk about how its god first even above their spouse/kids. or when they thank you but they thank god first (you know what i'm getting at) i just think there is something wrong with that.

i'm not trying to be disrespectful, but don't you think god might want you to love your family the most, and hold him at a close second?

i just don't think this is rational thinking, do you?

I have a problem putting my gods before my family. I believe that in honouring your family, and doing what is best for them, you are in turn honouring your gods or god, which ever you find comfort in.

I am Wiccan, and my spirituality and my beliefs are tied very closely to my family, and my children. My husband and I are the spiritual guides in my house, the ones my children turn to to guide them, and help them find deity. My children are the ones who will carry on what they are taught, and pass it down the line to their children.

By putting my husband and children first, and putting our spirituality first, I am putting my gods first. I believe that the Divine Spark resides in all of us, and by nurturing that spark, and honouring that connection with Diety, it is indeed putting it in the fore front, BESIDE my family. Not before, not after, but beside.

If anyone has ever read the poem footsteps, it is about one man's walk with the Christian God, the foot steps are not in front, not behind, but beside. And when they are just one set, it is when his spirituality cares him through the rough times.

No matter what your religious affiliation is, I believe that is how faith should work, your God or Gods should walk beside you, guide you when you are uncertain, bolster you when you are low, and bring you joy and comfort when you are sad. Not be placed on a pedestle, to be worshiped from afar and never known.

I believe in one great Universal energy, with dual componants, masculine and feminine, and I use a different name for each componant at different times, depending on the quality I need at that moment. But never do I put them before the safety and security of my family. I will call on them to help keep my family safe, and to help guide me in how to teach them, but they walk with me, beside me. That is, in my opinion how faith should work, it should just be part of you, something you do everyday, honour everyday, and live everyday, not just on sundays, not just when you need it most, and you should really know your Diety, have a relationship with Diety. Diety should feel like a member of your family, not something separate, and omnipotent, and to be feared.

I guess I would have to ask, why does this bother you? In the first commandment it says " I am the Lord thy God, which brought you out of Egypt, from the house of bondage. Thou hast no other Gods before me." We can often times put many things in place of God. . Sometimes statements are made because we fear what we do not know.I used to think if I became a christian I would have to give up the very things I enjoyed. That was not the case. See I had a change of heart, when i gave my life to the Lord and asked him to be the Lord of my life. There was a change that happened in my heart I know no longer thought the same way. In 2 Corinthians 5:17 it states that we are a new creation that old things are passed away and that all things become new. I had a change of heart, wanting to read the word of God, spending time talking to the Lord, and thinking about different scriptures. The Lord does want us to love our families and spouses but he wants to be first. Do you realize that the very air that you breathe is allowed by the Lord. It's because your time is not yet up. We don't just get to go to heaven simply by our good works, or by being a good person. Our name has to be written in the Lambs book of life. If our names are not written we don't get to enter.( Revelation 20 12-15). The only way that happens is to accept Jesus as our personal savior. Offering up control of our lives may seem a little overwhelming or unrational, but the rewards are worth it . When we let the Lord give us insight on how to fix problems in our lives, to let his word penetrate deep into our heart , letting his Love shower down opon you is one of the most awesome feelings. Yes, you heard me say it , awesome!!Don't just take my word for it, I pray you'll have a change of heart because that's the only way you'll ever know what it means to say "He is my friend, the Lord is my light, I will walk with him forever. When we let his love fill us we are never the same.

Some people GUSH, others are quiet and thoughtful about their religion. Best to study the religion and not the people belonging to it. Like in most things, the majority is silent. You get a lot of radicals in here; doing strange forms of evangelizing. Some are self-appointed God-police, many are not very intelligent and are bigots worrying so much about what other people do that they accomplish very little good in their own lives.

All I can say is, if you have a need for religion or a Church for any personal reason (may be a group to feel you belong to, a support group, a place to offer community service, or sing, or bake cookies for after church, whatever) check some of the quiet, not so much "in your face" organizations and see if you find a comfort level. If not, don't. And don't let the crazies get to you.

PS I highly recommend the Episcopal Church (Anglican). Many of those church are accepting of people as they are, and Reason is used as part of the fundamental structure of the Church. Good luck.

Definitely not rational. As I look at the answers of others I am reminded of why I don't follow the Abrahamic religions. These people would obviously take their child up on the mountain and kill them just to prove they fear their God.

I prefer to show that I love my family for they are a part of my faith and together our belief grows stronger.

You have a small view of God. His sole reason for creating us is to glorify Him. Don't get me wrong-- spouse and children are the most important things in this world, but God must be first, He demands it, He is worthy of it. When we say things like "God is selfish", or something along those lines, it only shows that we lack understanding of God to begin with. After all, He is The God, not us. Whatever you put first IS your God.

Way off base. God says in the Bible anyone who dosen't hate there family isn't worthy of Me. It is a bad trnslation, what it actually means is love less. god must be first, and He has every right to demand it. God is the Father of your very being, your soul. And look how His children treat Him today, with pround looks, blasphomous tounges, arrogant hearts. He created your soul, and only He can destroy it. Or save it for that matter. When you really know God,it is so easy to love Him and put Him first that you wouldn't have it any other way.

Yes i do think there is something Very wrong with that!!
And the answers above only strengthen my belief that there is something very wrong with the way their minds work (or hearts). And that god they speak so highly of !!!! Wow what an egotistical maniac! He demands it! He is a very jealous god! His SOLE REASON for creating us is so that we can worship him! Sounds like a real jerk to me!
Makes me glad i don't believe in him or a word of the bible!

If you are living a Christian life,God should at all times come first in your life.He is the one that is suppose to be leading .God is never suppose to be second in anything .but you are entitled to believe if its rational thinking or not, that's your choice and freedom of choice is still around thank-God.
