IBS can be constipation or diarrhea prevalent so I don't know which you have but I contracted IBS-diarrhea problems when I was 22. I'm 23 now. After about 7 months of tests they placed me in a medical study and determined that mine comes from a build up of bacteria in my small intestine. They had it under control for awhile but the part that stinks is if someone else around me even has a simple stomach bug or flu (gastritis) it can place that bacteria back in my system. That bacteria multiplies 20 times per minute so it can get me sick again very quickly and that is about all they know about it. They can't isolate why it causes the problems it does and who it bothers some and not others. Get a SIBO test if you haven't had one (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) test. I would have about once a month during the study. By the next to the last one I was basically normal but I had been exposed to a number of people with gastritis and tested positive on the last test (after going for 5 months) I again did the course of antibiotics (rifaxin) as I did when I began the study and they now have me on a 2mg dose of zelnorm which I take before I go to bed so my digestive tract can be regulated while I sleep. (Zelnorm is usually for constipation but they find the low dose helps those with diarrhea probems) I also take a probiotic every morning. It isn't for sale in the store yet but it will be an over the counter drug. Its called Align and it is made by the Metamucil people. I'm not sure when it is coming out but you could always ask your doctor about it. Also my gastro told me to stay away from the yogurts with the fancy bacteria. They can hurt more than help sometimes. I was told to eat Stonyfield or Brown Cow yogurts. They are the best for your digestive tract. There are all different levels and conditions with IBS though. You'll eventually find out what triggers your problem and you can adapt. They say something like 10% of the population has IBS... So don't feel alone.

Decrease stress for one thing. I developed IBS at 25 years old, never saw a doctor till I started bleeding and had pains so sever that I was pucking while it ran out the other end. Finally saw the doctor about it, it had become colitis, they told me if I had let it go it would have developed into chrons at some point. there are now medicine that you can take to control it. I am now 53 and wished I had gone to the doctor about 25 years ago. When my sister both developed IBS, I made sure they went to the doctors. Find out what type of a diet you should follow. They told me to increase my fiber intake, avoid some types of vegetables and fried foods. Good Luck. Just remember know when your out where the restrooms are and you might want to use depends diapers for long trips so that f you have an accident you don't have to fear getting your cloths in a mess.

I had it for 4 years. I was 28-32. I took meds and didn't eat any fried food or salad green veggies. eventually I was able to control my stress better and it wasn't so bad.
