Well I try not to have too many out-of-body experiences, as that means your close to dying...
However if I was going to have one, and their was a "cord" that connected my body and soul, I would think it would be made of memories...thoughts and dreams of people I love and things I have yet to do. It would anchor me to my body, and want me to come back, if it's not my time. Or if my time is over it would be a last look back on all i've accomplished or failed, and a "bon voyage" to my physical life.

Exactly what you just said it does, it keeps your spirit connected to your body, so you can follow it back when you need to go back to your body. When you die, your spirit will no longer be connected in this way.
