I have heard that a dog should have yougurt and that its good for 'em. And also I've heard that it is NOT good for 'em. Which one is correct? Is it good for dogs? Or not? And should I feed my dog it since she is so skinny and you can feel her spine very well? Please answer!

By the way, I feed my dog 3 times a day so I'm not abusing her. I take her for walks each day. But I just want to know if it will help her build up some muscle on her ribs. Also, I have the yougurt, ACTIVIA, and I was wondering if I could feed her the vanilla.

My dogs get Yogurt every single night before bed.
Oldest is 8+ youngest is 17 mos old. No diarrhea, no problems, and they LOVE it!

Yup yogurt is great for them, but make sure you buy the yogurt with the live bacterial culture on the ingredient list. Actually if you buy a yogurt with a higher fat content as well that will help a bit with the skinny problem.
If she is young still, she might still be growing and ready to start filling out. Have her checked for parasites.

most mammals are lactose intollerent shortly after being weaned from their mothers (even humans, although for most of us, it isnt noticably severe). I would not recommend feeding her yogurt, or feeding her yogurt in just very small amounts.

Do you feed her only dry food? If so, try and suplement it with moist food. Often, that will help an animal gain weight. Dogs are mostly meat eaters. Most dog foods are corn based, and use animal by-products, which are a form of protien that dogs cannot digest. I would recommend looking for a dog food based on chicken meal, beef meal, or some other specified meal. (these kinds of meat meals are basically meat minus the water weight; but be careful to choose a food that specifies what KIND of meal it is.) Be sure that it is the first ingredient listed in on the packadge, and that there is minimal grains listed. (whatever there is most of in the food will be first on the list, least will be towards the end, so make sure that IF there is a listed grain, it is towards the bottom of the list.)

Try not to choose a food that lists just chicken, beef, etc as the first ingredient, because that means that the meat was weighed while it still had all of it's moisture, so there really isnt that much of the product in the food.

Your dog is probably not able to digest the types of protiens that are in her food right now, so switching to a more digestible form of protien will probably help her put on wieght.

I have given my dogs yogurt on occasion. They have never gotten sick from it. I heard it is good for their coat.

Feeling the spine does not necessarily mean the dog is underweight. Many dogs are overweight, if that is what you are using as a comparison. Look at the dogs in the dog shows. Their waist should come in slightly below the rib cage.

Well you can give dogs yougurt but only in very small amount. It is good when your dog has the runs and to help setle their stomachs but I wouldn't do it for every day.
It will not help your dog to gain weight either. If you pup is not gaining weight then a trip to the vets to find out why is you best step to take.

Plain yogurt with live active cultures is very good for dogs. Most dogs like it as well.

Some other good things to give your dog is cottage cheese, turkey, chicken orground beef.

For added calories mix a good qaulity wet food in to her dry food (dry food should be a good quality and not one of the store brands such as Pedigree, Science Diet, Alpo, Purina, IAMS/Eukanuba, etc...these contain way too much cheap fillers).

Some good quality dry foods that also have a wet variety....Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Blue Buffalo, Wellness just to name a few

I have fed yogurt to my cats and it has helped them. (get the plain with no fruit which may upset the stomach) I can't imagine there is anything in there that would hurt your dog. If he is really skinny you should take him to a vet if you can. He may have worms.

When our puppies are starting to eat solid food we add 2 TBS of plain yogurt to their food along with a little A/D. Sometimes the puppies will get diarrhea when they are starting solids. The yogurt helps cut down on the diarrhea.

If your dog is in need of a good calcium supplement, then yogurt (plain) is very good for dogs. A nursing b!tch is an example of a dog that might need a calcium supplement.
If your dog is eating a high quality dog food, he should be getting enough calcium, and yogurt wouldn't be necessary.

Have her checked at a vet to see why she is so skinny, may be a health issue, parasites, etc.

Yogurt won't "hurt" your dog, but it is not really recommended to feed it as milk products can cause diarrhea, it has too much sugar, and it can ruin her appetite for the nutritious canine diet you should be feeding her.
