So I got my friend XP recovery disk to see if it will on my computer, and it will, so I was wondering what drive do I need to install XP on:

HP_Recovery (Fat32)
HP_Pavilion (NTFS)

This is what is asking if someone could help me that would be great!

Doesn't your HP system come with its own recovery disk or did it ship with vista itself?

anyways...you need to install on the HP_Pavillion (NTFS) partitions as the other one is a special reserved partition used by the system to recover back to factory settings if your system's messed up big time. i'm sure at boot up time there'll be a special key to press to access the recovery program before anything boots

Since Windows XP uses the NTFS partitioning, I highly recommend doing that kind of install. Any version before XP used FAT32 and the reason is simply in the different design. You would have to completely erase your hard drive and short of holding a giant magnet next to it, I'm not sure how to go about doing it. But when you install Windows XP, your computer will (by default) store it on your "C" drive. It gives you the option of whether you want to format your partitions in FAT32 or NTFS format. Personally, I recommend the NTFS because it is newer and most computer software is designed to run on that kind of file system.

Your friend's disk is designed to recover an operating system that is damaged, not something that is totally not there. So you may experience some problems when you put it on either one of the drives. Your default drive is the "C" drive.

Well to start off I had the same problem about a month ago. If you use the recovery disk it will just freeze your computer up because it will try to locate Windows Vista's files.

The best thing to do is restart your computer to be running as if you just opened it out of the box.

To do this on a HP computer you have to restart your computer and press and hold down F8 when it begin to boot up again. If F8 does not work try the other F keys (try F5-F12).

Remember, this will erase everything on your computer so BACKUP EVERYTHING!

This is the only way that i got my Hp laptop to run on windows XP again.

Good Luck.

P.S. If you want to try and just use a recovery disk install in in the NTFS drive because the other drive is just the recovery already installed on your computer.

hp has a feature that allows a laptop to create its own recovery disk. using someone elses disk probably wont work. instead of installing vista on a slow computer i would just buy a newer one which is more efficient. i also heard they are going to release a service pack for vista. remember that formating your pc looses all your files!

Click start, programs, click PC Help & Tools, click HP System Recovery..This will clean everything off of your computer, so back up anything you want to save. When you are finished, install your firewall, install your anti-virus program (update) go to windows update (express mode) install your anti-spyware (update) install service pack 2..Your computer will look just like it did, when you first bought it..Good Luck..You can also access the system recovery, by tapping the F-10 key, while your computer is starting up..

I had to edit my answer, because I don't know how to reply but yes you should format your drive. That will get it back to factory shipped condition, just the way it was when you took it out of the box. All of the original drivers should be reinstalled with it also, so if you put any parts into your PC, you will probably have to reinstall the drivers. Good luck! Hubby recently updated to Vista and we have had no problems, he loves it. Did you buy the actual disk or an online download of Vista?
