Decorate with a theme in mind. I chose travel for my house so that it wasn't too feminine looking, except the powder room that is decorated in a Paris theme. The lving room is mexicana style. The classic/old advertisments of spirits & wine is a great male theme.
Paint works wonders. A painted wall may not even need decor. Choose colors that work for you and don't be afraid to have contrasting colors in different rooms or one wall that stands out. Paint can make big rooms cozier, small rooms appear larger, taller, wider, etc. I also like designed painting. Consider four or six shades of taupe or gray and paint big "blocks" into the wall with 1-2 inch white dividers between each block. Or look into the Ralph Lauren suede paints. Great, non-obvious textures.
If money is an concern, make your own cube shaped boxed shelves leaving the middle hallow for decorative items. Curly willow in big, masculine looking vases are good too!
Restoration hardware makes frames that are specifically for vinyl records... buy some then hunt down some classic albums at garage sales & thrift shops. Throws & non-descript pillows are a good idea for men... and candles are always good! Target has some great candle sconces that are wrought iron. Very "male" if you ask me. Good luck!

If you want sophistication then black and white, contemporary. Limit your accessories to a minimum. If you want warmth and possibly romance then beige and reds with a touch of black accents (black picture frames with black and white photos that contain a touch of red in them). You can add candles and few art pieces that reflect your personality. You can try selecting your accessories based on something your really enjoy such as a favorite vacation spot. Or even somewhere you would love to visit. Just remember to make sure the home has good flow/transition between rooms. Decorate according to how you want to feel in that room and use colors accordingly. Look at friend's homes or pictures in magazines to decide what you like about them and what you don't like. This will give you an idea of where to start and what to exclude from you home.

The key, is texture and sophistication. Go with shades of brown with varying textures from suede upholstery to chenille throw blankets, a splash of black for accessories maybe an off white shag carpet.
Also, grey, black and red can be used as a sophisticated bachelor pad design but, the key here would be to use grey walls, black furniture and red accessories.
Stay away from patterns unless they are geometric (shapes or stripes...no polka dots). It would be best to stay with solid colors and just vary your texture.

Taupe or khaki colored paint and keep the molding either high gloss black or white and follow up with some flat tomatoe colored pillows for your sofa. Paint the coffee table high gloss black as well.....get a chocolate or tomatoe colored area rug...what else might you need? Oh! Lamps with black shades with a gold stripe around them would look great too!

I think you should try the industrial look. A lot of shiny metal, mix with black leather and soften with warm colors like yellow or orange pillows and throws.

oriental usually goes over well for dudes, a few pieces of framed art, usually inexpensive, a few pieces of table accents, maybe some complementing colored candles, chicks love candles, they put off a nice ambiance. touchier lamps are also a nice masculine welcoming touch, try hgtv's website as well
