First of all, EOD is a Navy School, based in Eglin AFB, FL. All four service branches attend. It is not, and never will be, "Army EOD School".
If your son is Army, then he has to attend a precursor course at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama - after he graduates from Basic Training (wherever he attends that). Both reclass personnel (those who have time in the Army from different MOS fields and are transferring to EOD) and brand new privates concurrently train. The AIT privates ... have unbelievable latitude. Your son, unless he has royally screwed things up for himself, has weekends off. A lot of these privates end up in the local bars and other unsavory places (and get kicked out of the program for screwing up in the process).
There is nothing keeping you from visiting your son at Redstone on the weekends (well, some Saturdays they do train in the mornings). There is nothing keeping you from visiting your son at Eglin on the weekends. However, the EOD program is no joke, and the chances of your son making it as an AIT private are less than 1 in 10. If your son isn't contacting you (and considering privates are allowed to have electronics, such as cellphones, at Redstone, this should make you wonder why) then it may be because he has his head in the books - or is distracted by something else.
Your best time for quality family time with your son is right after he graduates from Redstone, right before he is to ship for Eglin. He should have a few days, and you should be there for his graduation (nothing keeping family from that). That's a great chance to tell him you love him befor he ships to the really hard school at Eglin (it's almost a year long). If he still hasn't contacted you after being at Redstone for two and a half months, something is really wrong with him.
If your son is still in Basic Training, disregard all of the above as it does not apply.
If your son is definitely in Redstone, then ask for him. Same with Eglin. If you need help getting unit phone numbers (and this is on the assumption you have ZERO contact with your son) just let me know via email.
Good luck.
