Lots of suggestions - but you'll have to do a bit of research on our web site. We've written travelogues of our trips to Italy and posted them to help independent travelers like you: http://www.thetravelzine.com

If you've never been to Italy before, you've got to do the main large cities - Rome, Florence, and Venice. But if you have time and can rent a car, I find the smaller cities/towns even better - Siena, Pienza, Montepulciano, Volterra, San Gimignano, the Cinque Terre, the various towns along the Amalfi Coast... pretty much anywhere :-) It's a beautiful country!
Enjoy!

If you are going to Rome, see the Trevi Fountain!!! It is beautiful!!! Good choice going in October. The summers are hot and they don't use ice or have a.c in a lot of places

You'll love going to Italy. I loved it there when I went there. I suggest going to all the major cities if you can afford it. :)
