Can someone explain to me the mechanics of a low carb diet (how and why does it work) and how to maintain one. Thanks!

Your body takes the carbs that you don't burn and turns them to sugar. That is then stored as fat. Therefore, if you limit your daily intake of carbs to only those your body will burn before they break down and get stored, you don't have the weight of the fat. To burn the stored fat, you have to get your cardio exercise up and make sure it is a good routine and intense enough to do the job. Read this article for some more information.

All diets work in the same way. If they restrict calories to a point where you are burning more than you eat, you will lose weight. If the diet does this than it will work, if not you will fail. Whether or not a diet is healthy is separate from whether or not it will work. If you severely restrict calories to under 1200 per day, you will lose weight but going this route is very unhealthy so be careful when reading about these diets. Also beware of diets that limit you to one food. Even if you are taking in a good amount of calories, you won't be able to get all the vitamins, nutrients, fat, carbohydrates or protein from just one type of food.

when you eat carbs your body processes that into energy (sugar). When you do not burn it off your body will store it which turns into fat. Once you lower your carb intake your body will go back to the stored energy (fat). That is how the weight falls off. Your body needs so much energy depending on your level of activity.
