DAVID,

Wisdom teeth are third molars that usually appear between the ages of 17 and 24 (although they may appear when older, younger, or may not appear at all). They are commonly extracted when they affect other teeth—this impaction is colloquially known as "coming in sideways." [1] It is possible that wisdom teeth were useful when it was common for humans to lose several teeth to decay by the age when they appear.[1] Most people have four wisdom teeth, but it is possible to have more or fewer. Absence of one or more wisdom teeth is an example of hypodontia. Any extra teeth are referred to as supernumerary

I got my wisdom teeth in my early twenties, they hurt because they seemed to come up and go back in, Which im sure isnt what was happening, but thats what it seemed like. They took forever to break all the way through, but i never had them pulled. I am 30 now, and my teeth are a little closer together because of the wisdom teeth, but i guess i had enough room in there for them because my dentist says theyre fine. No reason to pull them if you dont have trouble with them.

They start to come in around your 16th to 18th birthday. And no, you don't always need to have them pulled. And yes, they can get uncomfortable when they start to come in. They have to push through the gum and the gum splits or breaks open as the tooth starts to push through. Think of poor babies that are teething and getting their first teeth. No wonder the littles ones get so crabby.
