"PSIBALL"?

For me, it was a matter of a few months. It happened during a meditation session at the end of hatha yoga class. Suddenly I was aware of this "immense empty space within myself."

The yoga teacher didn't even recognize what was happening. She only thought of yoga as "a form of exercise."

All I could say to myself after the yoga instructor dragged me out of the state I was in was:

"Whoa... what was THAT?"

IT TOOK MORE THAN 7 YEARS of further investigation before I could even begin to answer that question!

I started to get a flicker of what it was after 7 years of my neti-neti search. In other words: I had no idea of what it was, so I started a process of elimination ("Neti-neti" = not this, not this, not that....)

That is all the explanation I am going to give for my answers to the question: "what was it?" because all I can say is what it was FOR ME.

It might be something totally different for somebody else and I would just end up misleading somebody. This is an individual path of discovery and each one must discover for him/her-SELF!

The hardest part was the fact that there are no words in the English language that can be associated with my experience so I had to start from scratch, search through various Eastern Philosophies and develop a working vocabulary for myself before I could even start getting a handle on it.

I said "practicing yoga for a few months" but now that I know more about it, and with 20/20 hindsite, I can say that I have been practicing yoga for more than 40 years but wasn't even aware of it because I called it something else!

If you follow the eastern philosophies, there is no telling how many lifetimes it took me to get to my current state.
