my son is 4 yrs old and he is in a tumbling tigers class, its really good because 1) its not really structures so the teachers try to get the kids to pay attention but they dont scare them into thinking that they have to do it and not like it, and 2) they teach them how to flip and do obsticles in which all the kids love!! 3) the kids learn basic stances. The first few classes my son didnt pay attention at all but when he came home he was showing me all the stances that the sensai was teaching them in the dojo!! its fun for the kids and also for the parents to be able to sit and watch thier kids!!!

My husband and I have been asking around for a martial arts program for our 4 yr old daughter and we've been told that it's not a good idea for a child so young because it's hard for them to differentiate between when it's appropriate to use what they've learned and when it's not, like with other kids. The youngest age that most places will accept is 6 (and we've asked around at several programs).

4 years is a bit too young to go for martial art. Children need to understand what and the purpose of martial art before they start going for the program.

They have some but you need to talk to a studio about it. I think that putting a four year old in a tumbling class would be better age suited and help with coordination before putting them into a martial arts class but I think it is a good idea none the less!!

Depends where you are. My son started at 3 in Tae Kwon Do and is a white belt. At 4, your child is probably ready for the coordination and muscular dexterity a program requires. Check around for Tae Kwon Do programs.

It depends on what the places in your area do. my niece is 2 and has been taking karate now for 6 months. She started right before her 2nd birthday. They start them at a year around here. The younger classes are more focused on listening to directions then the actual karate itself, although they do teach them some basic moves. I would call around to the local places and ask at what age they start.

Probably none, since 4 year olds don't really pay much attention. I think the earliest age is 6, but I could be wrong.
