There is no one best, but my preference is a Cabernet Sauvignon. There are many fine ones (mostly from California) under $20.

Don't buy anything from France. Yuuck.

If you like a big, bold red - one that you hold the glass up to the light and can't even see through it, you will love Torbreck Woodcutter Shiraz. It's 19.99 but everyone I've ever served it to has fawned all over it. Don't let the screw cap fool you, this is a fabulous wine. It's actually sold out in the few places up here that carry it until April but you may be able to find it where you're at. It's a darn good wine!

Another good choice off the beaten path that most folks don't know about - Layer Cake Shiraz - $15 - YUMMY!!! Google it and you'll find really good reviews on it and my wine gal says it's better than a lot of $30 ones.

According to the evaluator staff of "Decanter" - probably the world's best wine magazine (May, 2006, article), seconded by other wine critics I've recently read (e.g. Malcom Anderson) the world's best red wine for the money (from $ 6-$8 USA; $ 11 - $ 14CDN, depending on state or province) that is commonly available is the Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo cabernet sauvignon.

As for the Trader Joe's: 2 Buck Chuck is a phenomenom but I find paying an extra buck for "3 Buck Moe" (J.W. Morris brand) to be well worth it.

There are a lot of different red wines. Do you prefer a Cab or a Merlot? Any others?

I really like the Falesco Vitiano 2004. Its only 10-12 dollars usually. Check it out at Wine.com

If you like very bold reds, the Concannon Limited Release Petite Sirah is good. It is very very bold though...great with a very spicy meat dish.

Wine.com also has a complete list of 90+ rated wines for under $20 at their site. Good info.

Australian red wines are very good and very affordable. I especially like Rosemount Estates Shiraz. It runs about $12 a bottle. By the way, the markup on alcohol in a restaurant is huge. I've seen the same bottle of shiraz for $36 in a restaurant. Alcohol is where most restaurants make the majority of their profit.

$20 buys you a pretty nice bottle of wine. For everyday drinking, Rex The Goliath Cabernet is really good and its only like $9 a bottle.

Try Lambrusco... if you can find it. It's very fruity, smooth red wine. Great for BBQ's ... well actually for any occasion. Very underrated in the US, due to import laws and production laws between in Italy. But it is soooo well worth the try! You will be hooked! That's a promise!

Try Argentine wines from Patagonia. Canale Black River (about $17) or Norton (around $12), both merlots.

I am particular to Yellow Tail reds, especially their shiraz-grenache. It's just amazing!

Charles Shaw Merlot....We prefer to call it "2 Buck Chuck". It is about $3/bottle! Very good. Sells very quick! Enjoy!
