I asked this earlier in the week but I didn't have recent pics of my pup at the time. So here is the scoop. In November I saw an add for an American Bulldog pup (3 months old). I called and the lady said that the new pup and her older doggy didn't get along. So I decided to adopt the pup. She is completely brindle with NO white. The lady said she bought the pup from a breeder and she paid $650 for the puppy, if she wanted papers the cost would have went to $850. She went without papers but insists that she saw the registration form declaring the pup an American Bulldog. Now, I have done research and my pup does *kinda* resemble some of the other bulldogs but not really. The website does say that this breed is sometimes mistaken for a Pit Bull. What is your opinion? Will I ever know what breed she is? (ps her breed does not determine if she stays or not...she's a keeper no matter what!)

Found this picture of an American Bulldog from an actual breeder.
Does my pup resemble this?

Then I found this info: READ THE LAST LINE??
American Bulldog is a very muscular, sturdy dog with a large, powerful head and jaws. He is very strong, but agile and light on his feet. The chest is wide and the muscular neck tapers from shoulders to head. The neck may have a slight dewlap. The head is square and broad with muscular cheeks and a furrow between the rounded eyes. The strong muzzle is shaped like a box. The stop is sharply defined and deep. The teeth should meet in a tight undershot, even or scissors bite. A variety of ear types are acceptable including rose, half-pricked and pendant. Though some people crop the ears, uncropped ears are preferred in the American Bulldog Breeders Association Standard. Any eye color is permitted, but black eye rims are preferred on white dogs. The nose is black or grizzle. In black-nosed do

ha sorry didnt put the whole article:
The short, harsh coat comes in combinations of solid or varying degrees of white, all shades of brindle, brown, red, or tan. The sturdy and powerful, yet compact frame, is characteristically stockier and heavier boned in the males and more refined in the females.
Temperament
American Bulldogs should not be excessively timid, shy or aggressive towards man and preferably not overly aggressive with other dogs. An American Bulldog should never be confused with uniquely different breeds such as the American Staffordshire Terrier or the American Pit Bull Terrier.

Most assuredly she is an American bulldog. My cousin has one just like it. Hers is a male which she had neutered.

She does not look particularly pit bull to me. However, I think that all of the bully breeds are part of the mastiff family and end up having a lot in common in their appearance. When I search for "American Bulldog" I get an amazing variety of dogs that show up. My understanding is that when a dog is bred as a working dog, which these dogs were, there is a wide range of appearance because appearance would always be secondary to the dog's ability to work. It's generally not until an organization like the AKC gets it's paws on a breed that it's "acceptable" appearance becomes rigidly standardized.
Either way, she's a lovely dog. It's always fun to speculate about what our dogs might be. I have a border collie who has some interesting ears for a border collie but she definitely displays all the instinct and drive of a border collie.

She sure doesn't look like an American Bulldog. From that picture I'd say she looks more like a Pit Bull. Very cute though. I would research about the Pit Bull breed just to be aware of any personality traits that could come along with that. Always good to know what you have.

Good looking dog. I am not that familiar with either breed. Here is a link to lots of pix of the American Bulldog. See what you think. They do resemble the pit bull a lot.

I believe that she is a mixed breed. She looks to be part Lab. An American Bulldog had a shorter stout or nose. A Lab has a longer stout. Her ears are also "floppy". Usually American Bulldogs are short and stick straight up. She is probaly a Lab/Bulldog mix. Hope I helped out!

I also have a dog that was purchased as a boxer english bulldog mix. Well for one he is buckskin colored with black muzzlenose. He is actually a pittbull/boxer mix. He is a wonderful dog . He plays hide & seek with my 3 kids and he actually hides his eyes while they hide. Don't let the breed bother you or worry. Just love her and care for her and give her a wonderful home. Our dog was sold as a different breed because she knew she would have a hard time getting rid of the pups if she said they were pits. Yours is beautiful!!!!!!!!!

she looks like a mixed breed to me. I think that lady that bought her got ripped off. I have never seen a pure breed American Bulldog that looked like that. She just looks like a mixed breed, possibly with pit bull or boxer in her. But it is hard to tell. You will never know for sure. But sometimes it is fun to guess. She sure is pretty!
Here are some pictures of American Bulldogs. It is possible that she is a pure breed, but she looks more like a mixed breed to me.

He's not an American Bull Dog or a "Pit Bull". He's a mix (most likely pit x). But that's o.k. because breed doesn't matter. She's absolutley beautiful and I'm glad that you care enough about her to NOT care about breed.

maybe a mix of boxer and pit. Go to bulldogbreeds.com there is a brindle in their phot gallery that looks a lot like your dog, so it may very well be pure american bulldog.

That is pretty likely an American pit bull terrier (and a GORGEOUS one at that!!). American bull dogs are *usually* mostly white (though not necessarily) and not as common as APBTs. American bull dogs are usually more "jowl-y" than APBTs, but not as jowl-y than English bull dogs. Either way, your pup is gorgeous. I love orange brindle!
