When someone knocks on the door my dog goes crazy. She barks and growls. If I don't pick her up she will bite the person at the door, unless she really knows them. She has bitten a few people and I don't know what to do. Otherwise she is a very good dog.

Knock the crap outta her....

she's the dog, your the owner...
whos in control? her?

I love em, couldnt live without em,
BUT
I will not let my dog control me and thats exactly what YOUR doing. Letting her be in control.

Keep it up, youll get sued sooner or later.

Find a good trainer cause you both need one.

I am dealing with the same issue with my dog. I asked a similair question yesterday and got a ton of answers. The best thing I can come up with is a trainer, but I can't afford that right now, so I am just going to try to keep him on a leash when I know people are coming over so I can yank (not abusively) him back and put him in his place and do my best to be assertive. I am a wreck over my dog, I know it's a matter of time before he bites someone and it's becoming a liability to keep him. Like your dog, mine is also a good dog besides when people come around. One good answer I got was to have the visitor try slowly giving the dog treats while they're there to show that they wont harm the dog. But, I think I'd feel silly telling my guests to do that. Good luck.

I just realized I typed this in my husbands yahoo account. If you want to read my answers I recieved its family4williams.

Be firm. Show her that you are in control. Here is something that you should try: whenever she is growling, put your hand on one side of her neck and push it down to the floor-do that until she stops growling and barking and submits . Don't yell her name when punishing her. Her name should be said when rewarding her, if you use her name for both punishing and rewarding, she will get mixed messages, and may act abnormally. Instead, when she is barking at the person who is at the door, snap your fingers at her. And when the person comes in the door, hold her collar, or in your case, hold her and introduce her to the person. Hope that this is useful for you!
