I know, call me a bad owner. I've fed my dog Beneful which I didn't care for. Now I've switched to Pedigree but I guess it's bad as well.

So what kind of good dog food can I buy that is inexpensive? And I'm not talking 30 dollars for a bag. 6 dollars is really all I can afford.

The following is a list of dog food that I consider to be good quality food:
Wellness
Canidae
Merrick
Innova
California Natural
Percise
Pro Pac
Solid Gold
Natures Recipe

Brands I feel are not great:
Beneful
Kibbles and Bits
Cesar
Mighty Dog
HiPro
Dinner Rounds
Gravy Train
Come N Get It

Look at your first 5 main ingredients, if they consist of corn, bone meal, by products and fillers such as peanut hulls-it is not a good dog food

Hope this helped, Good Luck.

There are many good dog foods out there. The most important thing (in my opinion) is that the first ingredient not be corn or some other grain. The first couple of ingredients should be a named protein source (like "chicken meal" as opposed to "meat and bone meal" - you want to know what the meal comes from or it could be anything). I don't like to feed my dogs anything with corn in it. I feed Canidae which I think is an easier step into the world of high quality dog foods. Assuming you live in the U.S. and not Canada you can get a 40 pound bag for around $30-35. You won't be feeding nearly as much as you would with something like Beneful or Pedigree so a 40 pound bag should last you a good long time. My very active girls get about 1 1/2 cups a day split into two feedings and do very well with that. My male is not very active so he only gets 1 cup per day.

I know this may seem rude but when you can only afford to buy $6 dog food, why have a dog? When you have a dog, you need to feed him quality food. There is no good dog food which you can buy for $6. Cheap dog food is full of fillers, which are hard for your dog to digest. They can cause skin problems, teeth problems, excess shedding and digestive problems. When you think about how much money you will need to spend if that cheap dog food causes a problem with your dog, it is so much cheaper in the long run, to buy high quality food. Even if that means dishing out an extra $20.

A few good dog foods to consider are; Innova, California Natural and Solid Gold. Talk to your vet about which dog food is very high in quality but doesn't cost much. Note that when buying the dog food, the top 3-5 ingredients should contain MEAT, no CORN or WHEAT.

Cheap food is poor economy. It takes up to 3 times more of the cheap quality foods for dogs to get proper nutrition then it does a good quality food. Also the cheaper the food the more poop produced.
Here is an example...I have Great Danes and I know many people with Danes..some of these people were feeding the cheap store brand foods and were feeding their dogs 10 - 12 cups of food per day and their dogs were having big poops and as many as 5-6 per day. They also either had either skinny dogs or overweight dogs.I feed a quality food..my Danes poop once per day, nice firm poops and smaller in volume. They also only eat 4 cups per day. They maintain a proper weight and have great muscle tone.

Also dogs fed the cheap foods are more prone to heavy shedding, excess dander, allergies, etc.

Some good quality foods to consider are:

Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul (both of which are reasonable priced), Premium Edge, Percise, Blue Buffalo, Solid Gold, Innova just to nmae a few.

I know that you don't want to spend much but good food prolongs the life of your dog. I give my dogs Nutro Max and it is about $17.00 a bag but I have one dog that is 12 and has been very healthy and a 2 year old dog. Spend a few bucks extra your dogs should be worth it and you will save on vet bills if they are healthy.

I wanted the same thing as well. I looked at all of the best of the best dog foods and realised that they were hard to get and too much money. So, I got Natural Balance. It is not as expensive as the other good dog foods but, it is still a very good dog food. You can find it at PetCO.

I also like Nutro. My puppy seems to be growing well with it and gives her plenty of energy! (Nutro doesnt have any corn products which dogs dont get any use out of) So instead of spending little money on food your dog needs to eat a lot of to get nutrients, spend a little bit more and they will be healthier! None of us really want to spend $20 per bag of food but when you think about how much better it is for your dog, its worth it!!

I'm not sure how much it costs but the best brand that you can buy at like walmart or your grocery store is Iams. Whatever food you buy you should make sure it doesnt have to many fillers and most of all not a lot of BHA or BHT. If it is used as a preservative and it is at the bottom of the ingredients list it is fine. I have read that they are doing studies on those two ingredients because they think it causes cancer in dogs
