I had a canary egg hatch today and the mother has not feed it all day. Does the new baby need to eat the first day? If she does not feed the baby do I need to hand feed it before bedtime?

For at least the first 24 hours the chick survives off of the yolk sack. DO NOT FEED IT!

The mom knows what she is doing. Dont worry. Like the previous person said the baby doesnt need to eat the first day. By the way, hand feeding a canary is a huge job. You have to feed the chick every half hour during daylight hours. I have done it and its not easy, so if you dont have to do it, dont start!
By the way, congratulations on the baby. :-)

The parents should be feeding it. Are you sure they aren't? They might be doing it when you´re not watching. My canaries used to not get out of the nest when someone was watching or near them. Make sure they are in a quiet place.

I think the mother is feeding it when your not looking and checking up on her! SO i would advice you not to hand feed it until your super duper sure! LOL!
