Usually you use same clothes win church and reception. Right after the church, everybody goes to the reception (usually in special restaurants)
Brazilians actually do not use Hats within marriages. Exceptions are accepted, but is not common.
September is not so hot neither so cold. Your clothes types depends from which region this marriage will happen.
South Brazil and southeast are more conservative, then, usually skirts are long, bellow knees.
Brazilian people goes directly to intimacy level on first contact. Be prepared to have a lot of hugs and kisses. After the marriage, there are a lot of dance too (standard; bolero, 90's 70's, rock 60 elvis like).

i recently came back to the u.s. after living in brazil for 4 years...you will find that for the most part, the clothing worn there for special occasions is not so different from what you see here...the southern part of brazil is a bit more conservative, so you might want to take that into consideration if this is where the wedding will take place...you can wear a different outfit to the reception, but it`s not necessary (of course it really depends on where the reception is held...if it will be at a restaurant or another location like this, you could probably wear the same outfit....if the reception is at someone`s home, then it would be entirely acceptable to change into clothing a bit more casual)...brazilian people are friendly and affectionate, there will be lots of hugging and kissing on the cheeks, which is something that might be a bit different for you (most americans are not used to this type of thing...it took me a while to get used to it!!!)...in september it will still be cold, as their seasons are opposite to ours here (depending on the date of the wedding, it will either be late winter/early spring), but don`t expect extreme cold...i was in southern brazil, (which is actually the colder part of the country, as it is farther away from the equator) and they haven`t seen any snow there since 1975!!! take my advice, try to learn at least some basics of portugese before you go...it will make it so much easier for you!!! before i went to brazil, i didn`t know anything of the language, and it was very difficult to me, so it would be nice if you could learn some basic greetings, phrases, etc., otherwise you might be totally lost, as i was!!! i hope that helps a little!!! enjoy the wedding and your trip!!!

I think that skirts tend to either look kind of cheap or trashy if they are tight and short, or these are just the run of the mill jean skirts that aren't necessarily sexy.
