well 6x9 are alot better for bass poundage than a circular 5.5 or even 6.5, to get optimal bass with out using a sub i would go for the audiobahn brand of 6x9's or JL audio...both are kind of expensive but give great output....there is an old sayin if u put in junk only junk will come out..so if u put in a good quality speaker high quality sound will be the results hope this helps good luck

Get some good quality 5 1/4's or components. You can get a template that turns the 6x9 into a 5 1/4". You will have many more options and the sound will be much better.

Pioneer makes some mean 6x9's. The problem is that even the best speakers will sound only as good as the signal you give them. You would need a good head unit, a good amp, and good speakers. I have panasonic right now and I love them. Really nice bass.

Brands change and so does opinions. My suggestion is to check out the highest rated ones on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Dautomotive&tag=uno1-20&field-keywords=6x9+car+speakers&rh=n%3A15684181%2Ck%3A6x9+car+speakers
The list is always updated so it's a good starting point. From there, read the reviews to help you decide which one will be best for your audio needs.

Personal experience, I highly recomend JBL'S. I bought 2 sets of 5x7's for my Escape and they're amazing. You pay the price for these speakers but they can definatley handle all you throw at them.
Excellent prices and service at these sites.

I recommend Boston Acoustics but they are pricey. I went with the Infinity 93.1i they have great sound of all ranges and they dont have that cheap papery plastic distortion sound.

The best 6*9's aren't even as good as Walmart 8"ers. Don't waste your money on 6*9's, they sound awful.
