Cardinals are bishops selected for special recognition by the Pope.

The Cardinals' most important job is to elect the next Pope.

Cardinals are appointed by the Pope from the Roman Catholic clergy.
Catholicism is a faith, based on the teachings of Jesus.
Are you asking how important are Catholics or the Catholic teaching? Both are very important and by all accounts a thriving international Community.
