You have come upon a great insight. Jesus rebuked the Scribes, Pharisees and Sadducees for adhering more to traditions and rituals more than the established written Word of God.
Jesus said, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My Word will never pass away." Customs, rituals and traditions are all inventions of this earth (except where established in the Bible) and they will all pass away with the earth. But the scriptures will abide forever.
Answer? Living according to scriptures.

Scripture, although we aren't perfect humans, we can only try.
I feel I know right from wrong, although there is seemingly more to it all than just this question... We tend to make mistakes in order to learn, we are a work in progress.
Custom to me feels like a cult. again it's learning what's truth.
learning the truth in all things is to modify as we go along on the trip to long life learning. And I believe scripture is the basics of knowledge and the oracles of God.

As a Christian, I feel it is more important to live according to scripture then custom. One is from God and the other is man-made.

Live by scripture ..... if you have a choice. God is the giver of scripture. Man has given us customs and rituals.
Christians believe that God has given us the words found in the Bible. That means, if one believes the teachings of God/Jesus one must follow scripture.
To follow custom is to follow man's words. Jesus told the church leaders of his day "Give to Caesar what is Caesars. Give to God what is God's." God's law is more important than man's law. Especially when there are those few times when man's law goes against God's.
Besides, on a more practical level, who would you rather tick off? Man or God?

Living according to scripture in how you conduct yourself and your personal relationship with jesus is very important, however, may i point out that god commands us to obey the laws. I believe that means or includes the laws of the land.
After that, you are given wisdom and freedom of choice.
The two may conflict but the answer is with you.
Your faith will guide you.
The decisions made will sometimes be right and sometimes wrong, but Jesus will always love you.

Living according to scripture, but you have to think very carefully about what scripture actually says and how it really applies. Biblical principles are universal, but sometimes people don't understand how to apply them.

i try to live according to Christ's commandments...customs are often comforting and can serve as a bridge to connect the past and present, but spiritually, they're pretty insignificant...
