When I very first watched it, back in the 70's I absolutely loved it. Now, thirty years later and a Christian, I see how flawed the theology is. Still, I find the music fascinating....anyone else with conflicting feelings about the movie?

I truely believed it sowed some seeds for my salvation.
There is some Truth in everything.
Yes, it is flawed.
But, there is some Truth in it too.
Love that music!
Yes, saw it in the 70's too!
Ditto.

I have no conflicting feelings about it. The music is cool. The theology, of course, would come short by many Christian's standards, because the musical was made by a Jewish man. The common Jewish belief is that Jesus was a prophet of God, at most, but not the Messiah, so the story would end at his death.
If you watch it with Christian expectations, naturally, you will feel that the most important part of Jesus' existence was left out. I see this musical as an interesting perspective of Jesus from someone of another faith.

JCS isn't a bad musical. As you say, the music is fascinating, but it's not exactly scripturally sound. I've seen the movie and been involved in a stage production as a designer, and it, like Godspell end too soon. Both productions end with Christ's death and not on His resurrection. Other then that, it's good entertainment.

Father K, You are correct in that it is a musical and not a theological document, but the problem arises, and I've had to deal with this with the musical "Children of Eden" is that people who aren't as familiar with the scriptures assume that what they are seeing is scriptural and not just entertainment.

Ditto.
I was in High School when I saw it. Jesus was cool because of the stage shows. It was easy to join a church youth group ...
But to develope as a Christian, prayer, Bible reading, challenging your faith is good to keep the spirit fresh.

I went to try out for a stage production recently and the only character recognisable from the Biblical was Pilate or the high Priests ... and they were theatrical. (I didn't get in)

Did you also see GodSpell back then?

Of course the theology is flawed. It's a bloody MUSICAL - not a theological treatise!!

Ted Neely ROCKS!! I've seen it uncountable times, in concert version, as a stage production and as the movie.

The movie was pretty bad - but the music is terrific.

The music is good, but from what I understand, Andrew Lloyd Webber was a Jew and this is based on a Jewish version of what Christ did. That's why it goes against Christian principles.

i enjoyed it...we had the sound track album (remember albums?) and i used to sing along with it...i never got to see it on stage...but i did go see 'godspell' back in high school...between acts the cast went through the audience handing out these little dixie cups of home-made dandelion wine...it was a college production...

I loved the play but was disappointed in the movie. Same with Hair.

The music is wonderful! I don't remember the storyline at all though... must be something about Jesus, perhaps?
