There are a few ways to tell gender of your finch, most of them depend upon what type of finch it is. I have owned both Society and Zebra finches. These are the two most usual types readily availible in petstores. Society finches are easily gender identified because only the males sing a squeaky courtship song. Females are usually quiet but often give a chirp.

Zebra finches are a little more difficult but can still be identified to the novice owner. Males usually have orange cheek patches or a bar on their chest depending upon color variety. Males also make several different sounds. Females make just a single chirping sound.

I own and raise Society Finches. I have owned Zebra Finches too but prefer not to raise them as they are not as easy going as my Societies and are somewhat louder too. I hope this may help you.
