you went and talked to the police and told the truth. That is more than most would do. The mother snapped and that happens but at 2 you can not leave them on their own near a road for even a second. They have no idea about roads and can easily get hit by cars. I hope the mum gets some help rather than be punished. We have all been there at some point or another

You did the right thing. Perhaps the woman was in a bit of an emotional state and when you attempt to spank a child and you are emotionally involved in it it can lead to abuse, however, it doesn't "sound" like she was really abusing the kids. It sounds like she just got frustrated as all get out, lost her patience, smacked him and shook him trying to get him to listen to her and he still refused. She ahd her arms full of stuff and was probably going to put it up and head back out to grab the kid and get him home.
Spanking or swatting a child is NOT illegal. Abuse is illegal and they are 2 totally different things. If you felt like the child was being ABUSED then maybe the cops coming was a good thing. If you didn't feel like she was abusing the child then you did the right thing by standing up for her.

I think you should hae told the police. I would feel bad too, but at the same time, its not like you are the one who hit the kid. Mabey there is still time, tell the police. Bystanders are usually helpful, but in this case they were not.
Tell the police, and what REALLY happened, there is always a solution.

No you did the right thing, sometimes we need to scare our kids. The child was probably not wanting to do what the mother needed to do and fighting her. You know how some kids wander off in the store, but mom is always somewhere around lurking and waiting for that child to realize that mom is gone and starts crying. It teaches them to stay with us and not fight us.

If you told the truth as best you knew, you did not do wrong. It's for the mother and police to sort out.

hard to say without being there, call the police station and tell them what you saw, if it bothered you enough to ask this, you will not be able to get it out of your mind until you do, good luck

The worst is that the guy and woman that called the cops have probably never had kids and when they do they'll righteously forget this little scene when they spank their children.

Hell YES you did wrong. You idiot.
What if she takes the kid home and beats it to death now because she thinks the kid ran away to those people? I guess you'll still feel sorry for her then?
Anyone who will beat and shake their child out in public for the world to see will do a whole lot worse in private.
Great job genius.
Edited to add: She was spanking and shaking the child. Do you know how much damage shaking can do to a child's brain. ESPECIALLY a child that's so small.

I don't think so. Sometimes, parents get a little frustrated and worn out and really just need some respite time away from their children. Especially if they are a single parent.
