The more you answer in a particular category, and the more Best Answers you get (not the percentage) the more likely you are to get a "top contributor" badge next to your name, up to 3 categories. Levels, and points have nothing to do with it. I have it for answering in Yahoo 360 and Yahoo Answers categories, neither of which am I on the leaderboard, but I have been answering alot of questions in these categories recently. I do lead the category DIY and I do not have "top contributor" for that category, but I haven't answered much in that one for a while.
Here's the link to the blog entry from the A-Team explaining, in a little more detail, "Top Contributors".

I've wondered that same thing myself. It makes no sense...I have more points and a higher percentage of best answers than many of the top contributors on this account. So I'm not sure how they figured this out.

From what I have read from Yahoo Answers is that you have to be consistently answering alot of questions in a given category. It is not based on best answers. Just how much you are contributing compared to others.
As you probably read some who posted comments have lost their title Top Contributor. It's kinda like playing King of the Hill. He/She who has the most gets the title.

The TC badge is offered no longer in basic terms on the inspiration of the optimal type of BAs.There would desire to be different parameters to boot that are no longer recommended or indicated to the consumers. One wonderful morning you would be taken aback which you have been offered the TC badge. And earlier you could bask interior the honour of having been chosen because of the fact the TC,it incredibly is yanked leaving no longer in basic terms egg on your face yet with the main idiotic and stupid smile with you attempting to describe to acquaintances as to what befell.have not you heard of the old quote,to wit,"Inscrutable are the procedures of GOD"?which would be acceptable to the boys at Yahoo who take a seat in judgment and think of that they are the Gods.those men dish out freely violation notices quoting community rules that have now substitute into so archaic that they'd additionally be termed as "PRUDISH".on a similar time as I agree that even Askers deserve the TC tag, tell me certainly no rely while you're sorry which you haven't any longer been offered a TC badge.i'm beneficial which you including your journey and comprehend-how have contributed to Y ! A better than maximum TC tag holders.I certainly have had TC badges for 4 categories in my previous avatars.I certainly have crossed all that degree of preliminary thrill. Now all I focus is on giving crisp, even terse and principally responses which mirror my stable perspectives yet devoid of rancor or enmity.the place attainable i like to spice my solutions with a sprint of humor.better than the tag,i became extremely gratified and proud while a client even went to the quantity of dubbing me "a fashionable-day Bernard Shaw".And while in comparison with that style of compliment 1000 TC badges might stand nowhere. acceptance of ones abilities would desire to come from fellow consumers/friends extremely than from a team of characters who proclaim themselves as "comprehend-it-all".And that counts for no longer in basic terms some thing yet a good purchase.those are what is going to swell ones coronary heart with rightful satisfaction. Have a outstanding Day.

I assume that you need to demonstrate that you know what you are talking about. I assume that your posts also must demonstrate that you have either an overall familiarity with the general topic or in depth knowledge with at least one part of it.
Who makes those decisions and what standards they measure you against is a mystery!

I think it takes a few days of continuous activity before they "reward" you with one.
Keep logging in on both accounts though, I believe the "orange label" gets removed if you don't keep up the activity.

You wont top contributor? Have fun. I complained until they finally took mine. They didn't give me my full name back though in place of it. Anyway I'm glad to see it gone.
