There are no advantages that I can think of to learning a language later in life, than starting young. It is much more difficult to do later in life, because your mind doesn't have the flexibility for learning languages that it does when you are young.
One of the other answerers said that you have to learn you "mother language" first, and then learn a second language. That is completely untrue. I have a friend who is Vietnamese, and she and her husband spoke to him exclusively in Vietnamese until just a couple of months before he went to kindergarten. Yes, he did learn some English here and there, but I would classify it as a secondary language to him behind Vietnamese. He moved into school and flourished, with no problems from not learning English first.
Best of luck to you!!

It's true that it's easier to learn another language earlier in life, but there would be advantages to learning it later as well.
You're fully capable of reading, so not only are you learning to speak the language, but you can read it as well - making it somewhat easier to learn.
You can choose the language you wish to speak, rather than rely on someone who basically gives you no choice in the matter, and if you have a "reason" to learn a new language, it's easier to focus on learning it.
Plus you have the advantage of age - more freedom, more time and the ability to choose a language that suits you or your needs. Who says you have to stop at one !
I hope this helps....
